Trip Overview

Overview

Mount Pumori is a popular peak located in the Khumbu region of Nepal, on the Nepal-Tibet border, in the Himalayas range. Climbing this mountain requires a high level of technical skill, physical fitness, and experience at high altitude. The mountain has an elevation of 7,161 meters (23,494 feet) and is considered a difficult climb due to its steep slopes and unpredictable weather conditions.

Preparation

Preparation for climbing Mount Pumori should include a rigorous training schedule to build physical strength and endurance, as well as technical skills such as ice climbing and crevasse rescue. It is also recommended to have previous experience with high altitude climbing.

Climbers should be prepared for extreme weather conditions due to the peak's location in the Himalayas. The climb can take up to three weeks depending on the route and weather conditions.

Technical knowledge

The climber should be familiar with multi-pitch climbing (rock or ice), be able to handle grade 4 ice climbs, be able to handle grade 5.9 rock climbs, and have experience climbing at high altitudes (over 18,000 feet).

Altitude Experience

Altitude experience is crucial for this climb as the peak is located at high altitude, and climbers will need to acclimatize to the thinner air. It is recommended that climbers have previous experience with altitudes above 6,000 meters (19,685 feet).

Fitness

To participate in this trip, climbers must be in top physical condition. It is impossible to overstate how crucial this is when climbing at high altitudes. The only way to develop the appropriate degree of fitness required on major peaks is to engage in consistent, demanding activity for several months prior to departure.  Climbers should be able to handle long days of climbing. To help you get ready for climbing at altitude, we highly advise following a planned workout routine with a gym or personal trainer. For further information on physical training, please get in touch with us.

Requirements

Requirements to climb Mount Pumori include a permit from the Nepal Mountaineering Association and a trained and experienced guide. Climbers must also adhere to strict environmental regulations to preserve the park's natural beauty.

Trip Itinerary

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be picked up by our representative at the airport and taken to the hotel. You will meet your guide, discuss the trek program, and make final preparations for the trek. If you have an early arrival, we will take you for a sightseeing trip in the UNESCO world heritage site in Kathmandu and later, in the evening, you’ll have dinner in the hotel.

From 20th March 2020 due to heavy congestion, all flights to and from Lukla depart from Ramechhap airport, 130km, a 4-hour drive from Kathmandu. It means now it’ll take an extra day to get to Lukla from Kathmandu though the flight price is the same.

Today, you will go on a sightseeing tour of the city, visiting some of the popular tourist attractions. In the afternoon, you will have a pre-climbing briefing with your guide and do some final preparation.

Kathmandu - Ramechhap via Road- Lukla via Air

You should travel to Ramechhap from Kathmandu to catch your Lukla Flight and follow the same route for returning to Kathmandu. After having breakfast in the morning, you’ll have to take a bus ride to Ramechhap which is around 5 hours and have lunch on the way to where you can try various Nepali cuisines.

After you reach Ramechhap, you’ll take a flight to Lukla from Manthali Airport which lies at an altitude of 439 m above sea level and is located at a distance of 132 km east of Kathmandu.A flight to Lukla is the most unpredictable part of Everest Three Pass trek itinerary and if the flight takes place as scheduled, you’ll reach Lukla in the evening or else you’ll need to wait for the next day to proceed to Lukla. There are several airlines operating flights to Lukla; Tara/Yeti Air, Summit Air,etc. and you can choose the one you like. Moreover, the best views of the mountains can be seen on the way to Lukla. Dinner will be ready at the hotel and your guide will give you the brief about the itinerary for following day.

You will get the view of picturesque sherpa villages, Tibetan Scriptures engraved Mane Walls and Chhortens and monasteries throughout the trails. We, then, head towards Tengboche which looks like a scene out of a movie. You will visit Tengboche monastery which is the largest and most famous monastery in the Everest Region. This monastery was built in 1916 as a companion to its mother monastery, the Rongbuk Monastery, in Tibet. It also serves as a gateway to Everest. In 1934, the Tengboche Monastery was destroyed by an earthquake and by fire in 1989. Both times it was rebuilt with the generosity of volunteers. You might pray with the monks as they are generous with their rituals and open to all who show interest, but no pictures are allowed during their prayers. Overnight stay at Tengboche.

From Pumori Base Camp, you must use a well-known climbing route that generally takes 15-20 days to complete in order to reach the summit of Mt. Pumori. The route's overall description is given below:

  1. Acclimatization period: Spend a few days in the 4,900-meter-high Pumori Base Camp to adjust to the altitude and get ready for the ascent.
  2. Camp 1 (5,650 meters): Ascend to Camp 1, which is perched on a rocky ledge above the glacier. This entails passing through a number of crevasses and a steep ice slope.
  3. Camp 2 (6,000 m): Camp 2 is located on a wide ridge above the icefall and can be reached by continuing up the mountain from Camp 1. This segment requires scaling up icy and snowy slopes.
  4. Camp 3 (6,480 m): Climb up to Camp 3 from Camp 2, which is situated on a short ridge under the summit pyramid. This part requires traversing a constrained exposed ridge and scaling severe snow and ice slopes.
  5. Summit day: From Camp 3, complete the last ascent to Mount Pumori's (7,161 m) summit. This entails negotiating a number of rock bands while scaling a steep slope of snow and ice.

Strong Sherpa team will be with us to prepare for the climb with the essential tools and materials.
